Das berühmte Drama von William Shakespeare in einer schwelgerischen Verfilmung: Romeo und Julia, Kinder zweier verfeindeter Familien, verlieben sich heftig ineinander und heiraten heimlich, was eine Kette von Tragödien auslöst und wie bei Shakespeare üblich mit vielen Toten endet. - Nicht so steril wie die meisten Bühnenaufführungen, sondern glaubhafte jugendliche Darsteller in den Titelrollen und eine berauschende Musik von Fellini-Komponist Nino Rota machen diesen Film zu einem mitreißenden, faszinierenden Erlebnis; Shakespeare wäre begeistert gewesen!
